Remote sensors in banana cultivation

11/03/2022 Go to Evidence

The study presents a review of the use of remote sensors in agriculture, with an emphasis on their applications for banana cultivation (Musa AAA) in Costa Rica and other tropical regions. It evaluates three main areas: the delimitation of cultivated areas, the estimation of productivity, and the diagnosis of diseases. It analyzes the advantages of using satellite imagery, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and drones (UAVs) in agricultural monitoring, highlighting their accuracy (up to 95%) in identifying plantations and detecting diseases such as black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt. The study demonstrates the potential of these technologies to improve agricultural planning, environmental management, and phytosanitary prevention.

Sustainable agriculture with associated crops

08/01/2022 Go to Evidence

The article analyzes crop association as an alternative for the development of sustainable agriculture in Latin America. Through a review of 88 studies, it shows that polyculture, agroforestry, and silvopastoral systems improve productivity, profitability, and climate resilience compared to monocultures. It highlights the benefits for soil fertility, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, proposing this practice as a comprehensive path toward agricultural and food sustainability in rural farming contexts.

31/12/2021 Go to Evidence

0.26 to 0.67 kg CO₂e is the carbon footprint for each kilogram of fresh coffee beans in conventional systems in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, while in organic management systems (agroforestry) the footprint is lower, between 0.12 and 0.52 kg CO₂e. (IICA, 2021)
