Deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon

01/12/2025 Go to Evidence

50% of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon occurs on forest lands where the removal of tree cover is prohibited, showing that forest loss is concentrated in legally restricted areas. This situation reflects pressures associated with land-use change driven by activities such as shifting agriculture, cattle ranching, illegal and informal mining, and illicit crop cultivation, all of which significantly contribute to the degradation of ecosystems and forested lands SERFOR (2020).

Forests in Latin America and the Caribbean.

30/11/2025 Go to Evidence

23% of the world’s forests and 60% of global biodiversity are located in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting the region’s strategic importance for ecosystem and biodiversity conservation. This significant share also reflects the critical role of LAC in providing essential ecosystem services and in supporting global efforts to address environmental degradation and climate change (World Resources Institute, 2024)

GuyMIS Maps 21,354 Hectares of Mangroves

GuyMIS reports 21,354 hectares of mangrove extent in Guyana in 2020, including 12,142 hectares of losses and 4,845 hectares of gains between 2015 and 2020. The system also records 32 restoration projects implemented between 2010 and 2020, including 19 seedling plantations and 13 green-grey infrastructure projects.

Guyana gained 1,276 net ha of mangroves

1,276 hectares was the net gain in mangrove cover recorded in Guyana between 2022 and 2023. Region 6 gained 1,642 hectares, while Region 1 recorded a net loss of 805 hectares.

Amazonian Palm Oil: Political Tensions and Transit

01/01/2021 Go to Evidence

This study explores the shift toward a more sustainable oil palm policy in Peru, driven by environmental pressures and tensions with Indigenous peoples. Peru's oil palm policy shifted discursively toward sustainability, albeit without formal approval or Indigenous consultation, which generated tensions in its implementation (La Rosa Salazar, M. A., 2021).
