Cadmium mitigation in cocoa

19/11/2024 Go to Evidence

The main agricultural, biotechnological, and post-harvest strategies for reducing cadmium (Cd) concentrations in the cultivation and processing of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.), one of Latin America's most representative products, are reviewed. The study, focusing on Ecuador and other countries that produce fine aroma cocoa, evaluates techniques such as microbial bioremediation, phytoremediation with hyperaccumulator plants, the use of organic amendments and biochar, as well as post-harvest practices such as mucilage drainage and prolonged fermentation. The results highlight the effectiveness of combining biological and technological solutions to reduce cadmium bioavailability, improve bean quality, and comply with international food safety standards, contributing to more sustainable and competitive cocoa production.

Cultural management in ecological practices

26/10/2024 Go to Evidence

A comparative study conducted by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) analyzes agroecological practices in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, highlighting the role of cultural agricultural management and ancestral knowledge in farm sustainability. Through interviews and field observation, it identifies key categories such as soil fertility, productive diversification, biological control, and resource conservation. The article shows how peasant traditions strengthen resilience, productive autonomy, and local innovation, driven by cooperation networks between farmers, NGOs, and international agencies.

Red macroalgae for sustainable agriculture

02/07/2024 Go to Evidence

The article analyzes the biotechnological potential of the red macroalgae Kappaphycus alvarezii, Acanthophora spicifera, and Hypnea spinella as an ecological alternative for sustainable agriculture in Ecuador. It highlights their bioactive compounds—polysaccharides, amino acids, polyphenols, and phytohormones—which can replace synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It also highlights that their cultivation does not compete with land or require fresh water, offering a viable option for reducing agrochemicals, improving plant productivity, and strengthening the coastal economy through the use of sustainable marine resources.

Agroecological practices in tropical livestock far

17/12/2020 Go to Evidence

The article reviews successful agroecological experiences in tropical livestock systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting cases in Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, and Guadeloupe. It analyzes how integrated practices—such as adapted genetic management, nutrition with local resources, hormone-free reproductive management, and natural parasite control—improve sustainability, resilience, and animal productivity. It includes emblematic studies such as Finca Tosoly (Colombia) and the “Lèt Agogo” program (Haiti), which combine food production, energy, and ecosystem services. The research proposes a framework for transitioning to resilient, multifunctional, low-emission livestock systems based on biodiversity and the circular economy.
