Predictive models and food security

16/07/2025 Go to Evidence

The study conducts a comprehensive review of the use of predictive models to strengthen food security in Latin America, with an emphasis on Colombia. It analyzes 65 studies published between 2014 and 2024 that apply algorithms such as Random Forests and Neural Networks to anticipate agricultural yields, manage climate risks, and optimize resources. The results show that agricultural, climatic, and technological variables predominate, while socioeconomic and nutritional dimensions are underrepresented. The article highlights the need to integrate multidimensional data to develop more robust models that strengthen the resilience and sustainability of food systems in the region.

Food Policy: Lessons and Priorities for a Changing

05/06/2025 Go to Evidence

Over the past 50 years, the world’s food systems have changed dramatically. Throughout, policy research has played a crucial role in providing evidence and analysis to inform decision-making that supports agricultural growth, better livelihoods, and improved food security and nutrition. The 2025 Global Food Policy Report examines the evolution and impact of food policy research and assesses how it can better equip policymakers to meet future challenges and opportunities.

Artisanal biopreparations in agriculture

16/01/2025 Go to Evidence

The study analyzes advances and trends in the use of artisanal biopreparations in Latin American agriculture, made with natural ingredients and native microorganisms as an alternative to conventional agrochemicals. Through a bibliometric analysis, it identifies the leading countries in research (Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico), the main types of biopreparations, such as Bokashi, and the crops where they are applied. The study highlights the need to strengthen applied research, knowledge dissemination, and collaboration between scientists and farmers to expand the adoption of sustainable agroecological practices.

Cadmium mitigation in cocoa

19/11/2024 Go to Evidence

The main agricultural, biotechnological, and post-harvest strategies for reducing cadmium (Cd) concentrations in the cultivation and processing of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.), one of Latin America's most representative products, are reviewed. The study, focusing on Ecuador and other countries that produce fine aroma cocoa, evaluates techniques such as microbial bioremediation, phytoremediation with hyperaccumulator plants, the use of organic amendments and biochar, as well as post-harvest practices such as mucilage drainage and prolonged fermentation. The results highlight the effectiveness of combining biological and technological solutions to reduce cadmium bioavailability, improve bean quality, and comply with international food safety standards, contributing to more sustainable and competitive cocoa production.
